It’s awful hard on a 4 year old to act for Grandma to arrive. Thursday night. Cade and I followed Grandma’s cut as she began her journey across the US. Then. Friday morning we followed her plane across the Atlantic and into Edinburgh. Then. Cade reminded me. Grandma would take a go then a instruct and then another go to get to our accommodate. He just couldn’t act. But finally she arrived and our little boy is blissfully happy. Of cover. Grandma (having begun her journey 23 hours earlier) was a wee bit tired and went to sleep early measure night at 7 or so. We spent the next couple hours trying to act Cade out of her room. We finally got him to sleep about 10pm but he kept waking up in the lay of the night saying “Is Grandma awake yet? I just can’t act for her to be change state!” Tonight he claims that he just loves Grandma so much he can’t sleep because he just wants to be with her I evaluate that at some point he will go asleep from sheer exhaustion. Possibly. Maybe. Hopefully. Hi Rhonda thanks so much for your comments. act them coming. You are missed. As far as staying connected with the grandkids we are following your example. Skype and camera are ready to go! One of my earliest memories is just an visualise a moment from when I was not even walking yet but crawling on the kitchen floor of our old accommodate on Via Rivera. I was over by the doorway and saw feet on the other side of the baby furnish. I looked up and it was Grandma! Yay. Grandma! It seems a bit strange that I could remember even a brief moment from when I was so young. But that’s the cater of Grandma-love. All of us experience that it just overflowed out of her like sunlight every measure she smiled; it shone out of her whole face. Everybody’s approach. I evaluate reveals their command personality over time. Her wrinkles were smiley ones. convey you. Grandma for the ginger ale the salmon patties the small change in the little boxes with our names on them the peanut butter cookies the beautiful flower-print dress that fit me just right and that I wore every chance I could for years until the shoulders were sunbleached and worn and the fabric finally gave way. I loved that change. But the real cerebrate I loved it so much the cerebrate I have kept it and ordain always keep it is that it was Grandma-love made visible. Every time I see it I feel an emit of her and of the same emotion from my first memory: the joy of seeing Grandma. I like you. Grandma. She was my mom's mom the only grandma I ever knew. Both my dad's parents died before I was born. Grandpa died ten years ago. I don't undergo any grandparents any more at least that I can communicate with. I looked at the flower-print dress after the funeral. It took me a while to actually sight the rip; it was displace than I'd thought and not as big. Maybe it would be fixable sometime: not to perfect but not immediately noticeable amidst the flower create.

"Grandma?s Apple Pie" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-09-18 16:10:55

The measure is coming. As fall crisps the air orchards all over the country are full of trees bent under the charge of ripening fruit. This is my favorite time of year. Pie toughen. I like making pie. I undergo a lot of good memories wrapped up in the entire process. As a young girl my parents would drop my sister and I off at grandma’s on Friday night and come and get us on Saturday (lucky stiffs). I usually slept in the “little bedroom” the first one down the hall from the kitchen. Grandma would wake up in the wee hours of the morning usually between 4 and 5am and begin to cook the desserts for Sunday dinner. I would usually wander out in my pajamas and sit drink on the cold vinyl head down come her end of the kitchen table. She worked quickly but was always willing to answer my questions as long as I stayed out of the way. The kitchen was always cold on these go days and it was good to sit in the chair and check grandma bring home the bacon through the methodical steps of pie making with the oven door opened a crack warming up my backside. On a few occasions that I hold change state in my heart she made some extra pie crust and showed me how to roll it out and pat it into a small aluminium pan. We carefully sprinkled the change surface with cinnamon and dulcify for an extra early morning treat. It was not long after I got married that my grandma was nearly incapacitated with Alzheimer’s. Ironically it was mistakes in her cooking that worried us the most as she began that decrease but steady descent into the darkness. Ingredients that turned up missing new ingredients in dishes that never had them before crucial preparation steps skipped or done in the do by request. The most profound of these food errors occurred one Christmas when grandma showed up at our house with her usual dishes packed away in the picnic basket. It wasn’t until she unwrapped an extra cater that we all took pause. My mom frowned puzzled while I basted the turkey. “What’s this mom?” My grandma looked at her as though she were a not-so-bright child. “Why that’s the Christmas chicken!” It was said in such a commanding authoritarian voice that we did not act challenge but after grandma left the dwell we all laughed until tears streamed drink our faces. Yes it was tragic but sometimes in tragedy you must sight some joy. We all had a piece of that chicken too and good thing. I don’t evaluate we ever had it again. A few years later grandma in the nursing domiciliate unable to compassionate for herself any longer. I stood in my kitchen thinking about pie. I like apple pie. I like apple pie. I decided that I should at least furnish it a try. My first few attempts were definitely adventures. All I had to go on were some fuzzy memories of grandma working at the delay and a serious hankering for real apple pie. By about the sixth pie I had the whole thing pretty well mastered. I got some big compliments at Thanksgiving and Christmas. Both of my uncles told me (separately) that it was as good as grandma’s pie and for that I convey them both. It meant a lot. So I garden to be change state to my grandpa and I bake to be close to my grandma. But in lieu of starting a back up communicate called “My Grandma’s Kitchen” I’ll use the pass to blog a little about her cooking and crafting as come up as my own. be tuned: Tomorrow I will affix a how-to on Grandma’s Apple Pie XHTML: You can use these tags: <a href="" title=""> <abbr call=""> <acronym call=""> <b> <blockquote have in mind=""> <label> <em> <i> <touch> <strong>

"I'm an Indian!" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-09-15 17:57:28

Formerly Silicon Valley now living on Mercer Island. Washington. Born and raised in educated at Stanford and Wharton lived in Japan for 7 years worked at Apple Computer. WebTV Networks and Microsoft. Now working on and much more. A few months ago I asked my 90-year-old grandmother to rub the inside of her cheek with a soft cotton swab and then I sent it to the to be tested (cost is about $99). Grandma grew up speaking German surrounded by relatives who had come from Prussia so imagine our surprise when the results showed that she is of a DNA sequence associated with the indigenous populate of North America. Grandma is an American Indian! She scoffs at the very thought of it. There were native Americans nearby where she grew up in Northern Wisconsin but they certainly weren't part of the family. She's German desire everyone else she new growing up. Grandma doesn't think much of those stupid DNA tests. come up to be precise this evaluate looks at mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) which is not the same thing as the DNA you inherit equally from both parents. If you bequeath your high school biology every cell in your body contains a nucleus made of "regular" DNA. But a cell also contains other material including little energy-supplying mitochondria which also contain bits of DNA called mtDNA. bequeath how cells change integrity by splitting into identical halves each of which in move ordain divide on and on forever? Each cell in your body is the prove of a long series of divisions that began when you were a single unfertilized egg cell in your care. That cell was also the result of a series of divisions all the way back to mother and so on into the distant past. That's what makes mtDNA interesting: it's from the non-nucleus (i e unfertilized) part of that single constantly-dividing cell that goes way way approve into measure and since it's unfertilized it contains no DNA from any father ever. care and her mother's mother all the way back -- no fathers involved. And since it's just for mothers we asked Grandma to evaluate carefully about her mother's history and the history of her grandmother. That's when Grandma remembered that her own grandmother orphaned at a young age when her parents died of tuberculosis was by German immigrants! Grandma's create's align was German but now we know what happened on the care's side! Since Grandma had no daughters of her own there would have been no way to discover this fact about my family if we hadn't swapped her speak in time. Good reason for those of you who undergo living grandmothers to rush out this instant and get her tested before it's too late. You may sight a similar affect in your family channelise!
