"Warrantless Spying Showdown Postponed to Monday" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-15 16:18:06

Senate Majority leader Harry Reid announced Friday that he ordain go away debate Monday on bills that ordain let the nation's spies use American telecom facilities and services for warrantless wiretapping choosing to go away with the most expansive account and then letting a back up version be considered as an amendment. Congress is moving quickly on the legislation since the Democrats are seeking to reverse some of the extensive surveillance powers it handed to the Administration this pass in go legislation known as the defend America Act. challenge could undergo started as soon as today forcing a promised filibuster to happen over the weekend but today Reid indicated on the Senate floor that he would wait until Monday: In this instance on the FISA bill the controversial but important FISA account there are two committees that have jurisdiction. Intelligence committee and after that it is referred to the judiciary committee. They have both done their work and they have done good work. What some may want to do is take what I thought was the best out of one and the best of the other and bring it to the surprise. I cannot do that unless I trample the system. Under regular request. I will bring the intelligence committee bill to the floor and the first operative challenge after that is the judiciary committee. Senator Leahy is an experienced veteran legislator here longer than I and he knows what it do. The Senate will work its ordain as to what needs to be done with FISA. I'll pledge you right now one thing that's going to become: not everyone ordain be happy. The act comes after weeks of speculation over whether Reid would like the Senate Intelligence committee's version - a account favored by the Administration -- or the Senate Judiciary's version. Senator Christopher Dodd (D-Connecticut has a hold on the Intel bill since it includes amnesty for telecoms being sued for helping with the government's secret warrantless wiretapping program but Reid decided to override that hold. Civil liberties groups prefer the version from the Judiciary Committee led by Senator Patrick Leahy (D-Vermont) since it requires an investigation into the warrantless spying program is mum on immunity and more tightly limits warrantless wiretapping inside American soil. Dodd has also promised to filibuster any account granting retroactive immunity to telecoms a move that fellow Senators/Democratic presidential candidates Barack Obama (Illinois) and Hillary Clinton (New York) said they would give. Opponents of the Intel account claim that setting that account as the default and the Judiciary as the substitute makes it nearly impossible to substitute the latter for the former since it could require up to 60 votes to do so. If Reid had reversed the order putting the Judiciary bill first it could undergo taken 60 votes to include pardon. On Wednesday. 14 senators ( pdf) Reid to go away with the Senate Judiciary account since it was written up in an open rather than secret affect. Any bill that is passed by the Senate ordain undergo to be reconciled with the House's already passed Restore Act. That bill has no immunity provision and lets the NSA eavesdrop without warrants inside the United States only so long as they know that their targets are foreigners communicating with other foreigners and don't use any accidentally collected communications from Americans without getting a act order. Since that provision doesn't provide the NSA with a way to request companies such as explore or AT&T to help. House Republicans lay out the bill effectively requires the NSA to get act orders to eavesdrop anyone when the NSA wants to collect that info from switches and communication companies inside the United States. I ordain shortly act to speak to S. 2248 the FISA Improvement Act of 2007. I spoke briefly on this affect earlier but I want to provide a more complete explanation of the process by which the Senate will consider this important bill. Earlier this year the Director of National Intelligence came to Congress and alerted us to what he described as a significant gap that had emerged in our nation’s foreign intelligence gathering capacity. Members on both sides of the aisle – and from all sides of this important debate – became convinced that this problem was real and that we had an obligation to communicate it. Although we may differ on the solutions required all Senators – both Democrats and Republicans – want to ensure that intelligence professionals undergo the tools they need to keep our country as safe as possible. We worked in good faith with the Administration through July and August to provide those tools in a way that protects the privacy and liberties of law-abiding Americans. Many other Democrats and I opposed the so-called defend America Act. That’s why we made sure that it had a six-month sunset so that we could go back to do a exceed job of ensuring judicial and congressional oversight of these sensitive activities. As my colleagues know the Senate Judiciary and Intelligence Committees share jurisdiction over the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act. Both Committees undergo worked diligently over the past few months this hard work has resulted in two different versions of legislation to improve FISA – S. 2248 – reported out of the Committees. I consulted extensively with head Rockefeller and Chairman Leahy about the best way for the Senate to consider this subject. I have determined that in this situation it would be wrong of me to simply decide one committee’s bill over the other. I personally advance many of the additional protections included in the Judiciary Committee bill and I argue the concept of retroactive immunity in the Intelligence bill. But I cannot do by the fact that the Intelligence bill was reported favorably by a vote of 13-2 with most Democrats on the committee supporting that come. I explored the possibility of putting before the Senate a account that included elements of both two committee bills. Earlier this week. I used Senate Rule 14 to displace two bills on the calendar. The first – S. 2440 – consists of Titles I and III of the Intelligence bill but did not include Title II on retroactive immunity. The second account – S. 2441 – consists of call I of the Intelligence bill and Titles II and III of the Judiciary account. But after consulting further with head Rockefeller and head Leahy a consensus emerged among the three of us that the best way to speak would be by regular request. Both Chairmen agreed with this come. Under regular order and the rules of the Senate governing sequential referral. I ordain act to speak to S. 2248 – the account reported by each committee. When that communicate to proceed is adopted the work of both committees will be before the Senate. Because of the order in which they considered the bill the Intelligence Committee version ordain be the locate text and the Judiciary Committee version ordain be automatically pending as a substitute amendment. In the weeks since the two committees acted. Senators Rockefeller and Leahy undergo been working hard to change the difference between their two versions of the account. The ranking Republicans. Senators Bond and Specter have been included in many of these conversations. I evaluate that when we begin debate on the account there ordain be amendments to incorporate many of the Judiciary Committee provisions into the Intelligence Committee text. In my view that will make the final product stronger. There is one air.

"Put Pressure on Hazing" posted by ~Ray

Welcome to the Wired Community Blog. We created this site because we recognized a huge hunger in the industry for examples and ideas on how one could improve their online community or help them create a written Internet strategy. With over 10 years of working with some of the brightest minds in the industry we've seen alot of what can and cannot work. Wiredcommunities was created to give populate like you a place to join with peers to share best practices and ideas as well as concepts that did not work. Together we can solve any online community building issue! overlap your stories! Every year we hear about students becoming seriously injured and dying because of the long tradition of hazing. This year is no different. I construe an article in The Philippine feature about a who recently died because of a hazing incident. The president of the University. Emerlinda Roman expresses her grief and outrage at the tragedy. I have to accept with what is said. I evaluate it's time for alumni to change state involved. Alumni could be strong advocates to end hazing and maybe the students would be more apt to listen and pay attention to them. Many alumni read about these horrible tragedies but don't have a vehicle to overlap their opinions thoughts and possibly change surface firsthand experiences on hazing with the kids that are affected the most. Organizations should use the example of Chris Anthony Mendez and the University of the Philippines as a proactive stance against hazing. And they should begin this immediately rather than waiting for the day it happens on their campus. By using blogs podcasts opinion polls talk approve tools and wiki's to collaborate alumni could act content that students will understand. accept for a medium in which students and alumni can talk about this and other issues your campus faces. Just because hazing has been around for a desire time and just because it's always been done that way doesn't mean it has to act. It's been proven over and over again how dangerous hazing is. Give your alumni the ability to be heard and maybe they can put the compel on to stop hazing in its tracks. This doesn't undergo to start and end with hazing either! Use social media tools to get your alumni's enter on all the tough issues you experience your campus is dealing with. It's another way to instruct communicate cerebrate and make a real difference. "Re: add old wireless router as access point hard wired to main CPU ..." posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-17 20:11:12

We recently had installation and while TV has been great we're more than dissapointed in internet. It's been one thing after other. Tech just came out again.. but it seems no one (in person or via phone tech supp) is very familiar with Macs! aarrg. Initial install was labeled as "express" should have been "Pro" we lose signal constantly decrease speed and hanging pages when able to access and now our phone service is also having problems... I'd desire to give it a come about if I can make my computer network viable desire it used to be before this headache... Due to wiring location problems the 2equip box is located in an off room location not accessible by wire in house. All tvs are hard wired via existing RG to main and we have been able to access RG/DHCP with our wireless connected laptops. We cannot however connect the main Macintosh CPU to be able to use the internet or to have access to the network printer that used to be connected by our old router/switch network that was dismantled to install uVerse. There is no ethernet wired to that area (nor the possibility of) and the USB wireless 2wire connector left by tech support doesn't work with Macintosh (att said it would...2wire says it doesn't!!) I would like to use one of the old wireless router/change by reversal I had as an find inform to extend the range to futher reaches of the accommodate currently not able to read a full wireless signal from the main 2wire box... BUT most importantly as a way to undergo the CPU connect to the internet by reading "wirelessly" the communicate from the 2wire. For example: 1) att inbound signal>2equip box>tv and wireless DHCP to networkComputer connections: a) laptops wireless via broadcast b) CPU wired to old wireless router as find point to enable find to wireless 2equip boxIt's a Netgear WGR614. Is this doable? If so can someone help with settings for the old router I'd like to use as access point? I'd be most appreciative of go by step for the settings if at all possible please... TIA! I think you convey you want to use your other router as a bridge and not an access point. From what I understand you want to use the 2equip as the access point and use the netgear as a wireless adapter if you will. Is this what you be?I don't evaluate DD-WRT is an option here so I don't know if this is doable or not. AT&T used to supply HPNA dongles before they had integrated HPNA on the STB. The dongles had 2 UTP ports on them. If you can get AT&T to install one in lie of an STB you can cerebrate your Mac to the second port provided it is in proximity to a TV...... just a thought. I'm not sure that I am clear on what you are describing. Are you attempting to extend or get better wireless coverage in areas that the RG isn't getting to?If so then that isn't too hard. I used my old Linksys WRT54G as an additional WAP (Wireless Access Point) on the revised LAN. The affect would be VERY similar for a Netgear or most domiciliate wireless routers. After the lay techs had run Cat5 to all of my TV's. I put 5 port 10/100 switches on each (giving me additional hardwired connections at each location). This allowed me to connect my game consoles and other devices and act them off of wireless adapters. At the furthest run (to my downstairs bedroom) instead of a "dumb" change by reversal. I put my old (and about to be retired) wireless router/switch. Prior to connecting it. I went into it's configuration disabled its own DHCP service gave it a static IP on the RG's network changed it from "gateway" to "router" disabled the internal firewall and gave it the same SSID (but different channel) as the U-Verse RG. I then plugged the Cat5 into a LAN port (instead of its WAN port) and then plugged the STB. Xbox 360 into the other open LAN ports. Wireless security was then setup to duplicate the main RG. In my case open no encryption but a MAC allow list. 0 && this options[this selectedIndex] determine) window location href = jsmf_scripturl + this options[this selectedIndex] value substr(jsmf_scripturl indexOf('?') == -1 || this options[this selectedIndex] value substr(0. 1) != '?' ? 0 : 1)+'/';">

I really like the be of this one in that it has just enough of what I would like. The kitchens in all the new developments are too small for me though and usually don't undergo windows or a strong enough fag vented to the outside. I don't love the marketing campaign... I would desire to see something more than a couple of kids opening a box. show me something about the building!! Didn't someone write nearly the exact same evaluate ^^^ of another showroom a few days ago I cognise we've seen it before but I like the "D" lie split bedroom two-BR layout. "Google Plans to Put Video Ads Into Search Results" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-03 15:51:48

At CitiGroup's Technology arrive at in New York this week. Google's Business Product Manager for Ads Quality Nicholas Fox said the company ordain be moving ahead with integration of video and image ads within sponsored examine results. Does that mean you will soon be seeing TV commercials at the top of Google examine results page? Maybe. "It's a topic that's come up in a lot of internal discussions," said Fox during a Q&A session about explore's search usage and trends. We be to do the beat job of conveying information to the user. In many cases that's a text ad. In some cases it may not be a text ad. It may be an image it may be a video it may be something else. The assay though is that we don't be to show things that are garish or flashy or other things that might cause users to become blind to the ads. You could think of a local butcher. Maybe a 10-word text ad explaining that local butcher's business probably is not going to be enticing and get the user to move on the ad. But if you could have a video of the butcher explaining his business and showing all this fresh meat.. then maybe the user would get much more determine out of that. And the advertiser would also get more determine as well. Fresh meat huh? Google of course has already made steps in this direction with universal examine blending listings from its images news and video search engines among those it gathers from crawling web pages. In the case of universal examine however the images and video it supplies are search results not ads. The cozen for the affiliate as Fox notes will be finding a way to capitalize on the information element of such ads.. like those glistening tenderloin cuts.. without alienating users. "I evaluate you might see things along those lines," Fox continued. "My expectation is that we'll do some more thinking around this area and potentially some experiments. evaluate a scenario where we'll move extremely cautiously though." We've been suggesting this move for over a year.. but the block is content - how can you get that many butchers or hairdressers to alter that many ads that there is variety? EZ Show video ad-builder is the ONLY way.. automation of mass video ad production. We've been suggesting this move for over a year.. but the block is circumscribe - how can you get that many butchers or hairdressers to alter that many ads that there is variety? EZ show video ad-builder is the ONLY way.. automation of mass video ad production. This takes us one go closer to having a "be" person appear on a web page. "Hello there!" Indeed. Thank goodness for Flashblock and other ad blockers. Video ads already appear on pages and they are designed to be distracting. Who needs that? Maybe someday content won't be if the user is blocking ads. I welcome that day it'll be a good day for serious reflection on what the net is and should bring about to some intelligent changes. Remember when the internet was ad-free back before WE undergo TO MAKE MONEY TO be IN BUSINESS came along shortly followed by its siblings WE HAVE TO MAKE A PROFIT and GOT TO act THE SHAREHOLDERS HAPPY? Those were the days. We're one more gesticulate of bad-idea ads (and again remember a few years ago when these were decried as a horrible idea?) and a destruction of net neutrality away from the internet becoming TV2. Great. This would in all likelihood cause the employees at my Fortune 500 affiliate to cease using Google for work related internet searches. Our company uses Websense and blocks streaming video and if an employee goes to google search and is greeted by a banner that content had been blocked for forbidden content they will get spooked and won't go approve. To be perfectly honest I desire this idea. Some of these video ads I see are quite good and I trust Google to be able to implement them into its examine results well as it is doing with universal search. But then again I'm a biased Google fanboy so you can't really trust me to be objective on the matter. · The videos wouldn't go away streaming as soon as you alter a examine. There'd have to be a compete add to start a video. If it's automatic streaming then I'll just undergo to sue Google for making me deaf; wearing a headset with 100% volume is dangerous when browsing certain sites. · Google ordain have to have a human aggroup to evaluate or evaluate video ads based on flashiness and cram. · Google will combine a video-editing tool to allow advertisers to create a quality video. wow.. wasn't explore built on the idea that conceive of ads were bad? I actually like their adwords... I have open what I was looking for in those ads at least a few times. Unless explore has some magic card up their sleeve that makes these ads less obtrusive and annoying and more helpful than all the others on the net. I'm going to be very disappointed and I agree that many people ordain be finding a new search engine. If videos go away bogging drink my bandwidth. I know I'll be done with them. The trick is to give webhosting.
